Years 1 & 2
In Autumn 1, year one will be exploring the global theme of Identity and Diversity through our core text ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ by Charlie Mackesy. We will be reflecting on our dreams and hopes for the future through acts of kindness and showcasing them within our Museum of Hope exhibition at the end of term.
In English, the children will be exploring instruction guides and will write their own, by the core text on how to show kindness. They will be developing their oracy skills throughout the term by taking on different discussion roles such as ‘builder’, ‘challenger’ and ‘instigator’ whilst also recognising how they can develop their presentational speech when speaking to different audiences. This will enable them to confidently recite their guides to being kind orally, alongside their hopes for the future in what career they would like to be written in RSE lessons, during the Museum of Hope exhibition. As we move into the second half term, year one will continue to draw on the theme of Identity and Diversity through the study of our core text ‘The Paper Bag Princess’ by Robert Munsch. We will be focussing on how we can celebrate identity by looking into gender stereotypes through history. We will look at the suffragettes and how they have influenced our life today,
In maths this term, we will be focussing on place value, developing our knowledge of tens and ones and building on our reasoning skills by working practically with dienes, place value counters and unfix. We will also be developing our knowledge of number bonds to five and ten. Then we will develop out knowledge of 2’s 5’s and 10’s. Our RSE lessons will focus on recognising different emotions that we feel and learning different mindfulness strategies that we can use to help regulate and positively respond to different emotions. We will reflect and compare different emotions through music and art and will orally share their random acts of kindness project in an assembly. In art, the children will use colours to portray different emotions. We will be experimenting with different mediums such as inks and watercolours to create our own vertical strip collage. We will then use these to create a weaved piece of art. In science we will be learning about materials, discussing what they are made of and why each material has certain properties. We will then use our knowledge of materials to investigate what would be best to create our own umbrella. In PE, we will practise multi skills both in and outdoors through developing our running skills and our dance movements. PE will take place on Monday and Wednesday for Year 1 and Wednesday and Friday for Year 2.
In year one, our reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday and reading records will be updated on a Thursday. Parents can support their children's learning through reading and discussing the books daily, recording in reading journals and by giving children the opportunity to visit the local library to read about and research our topics. We will also be sending out spellings and phonics or maths related activities on a Friday, which are due the following Tuesday. Additionally, there will be a variety of homework activities to choose from at the start of the term relating to our overarching theme.
