Years 1 & 2
In Autumn, Year 1 will be exploring the global theme of Peace and Conflict through our core texts 'The Lonely Beast' and 'The Fort'.
In English, the children will be exploring writng stories and will write their own using a story map. They will be developing their oracy skills throughout the term by taking on different discussion roles such as ‘builder’, ‘challenger’ and ‘instigator’ whilst also recognising how they can develop their presentational speech when speaking to different audiences. This will enable them to confidently retell their stories orally. As we move into the second half term, Year 1 will continue to draw on the theme of Peace and Conflict through the study of our core text ‘The Fort'.
In maths this term, we will be focussing on place value, developing our knowledge of tens and ones and building on our reasoning skills by working practically with dienes, place value counters and unfix. We will also be developing our knowledge of number bonds to five and ten. Then we will develop out knowledge of 2’s 5’s and 10’s.
Our RSE lessons will focus on recognising different emotions that we feel and learning different mindfulness strategies that we can use to help regulate and positively respond to different emotions. We will reflect and compare different emotions through music and art and will orally share their random acts of kindness project in an assembly.
In art, the children will be making cardboard relief landscapes and using watercolours and pastels.
In science we will be learning about materials, discussing what they are made of and why each material has certain properties. We will then use our knowledge of materials to investigate what would be best to create our own umbrella.
In PE, we will practise multi skills outdoors and gymnastics/dance inside.
In Year 1, our reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday and reading records will be updated on a Thursday. Parents can support their children's learning through reading and discussing the books daily, recording in reading journals and by giving children the opportunity to visit the local library to read about and research our topics. There will be a variety of homework activities to choose from at the start of the term relating to our overarching theme and uploaded to Google Classrooms for children to access.
In Autumn, Year 2 will be exploring the global theme of Identity and divisity through our core texts 'Island Born' and 'Suki's Kimono'.
In English, the children will be exploring the art of diary writing an will be writing their own diary for their published outcome. . They will be developing their oracy skills throughout the term by taking on different discussion roles such as ‘builder’, ‘challenger’ and ‘instigator’. They will also be writing non-chronolgical reports in Autumn 2.
In maths ,we will be focussing on place value, addtion and subtractio, money and multilplication and division.
Our RSE lessons will focus on relationships - families and friendships, safe relationships and respecting others.
In art, the children will be making 3D raised tryptic layered island settings inspred by Leo Espinosa and also looking at Japanese floral art using watercolour and ink.
In science we will be learning about living Things and their Habitats and Animals including Humans.
In PE, we will practise the fundemental skills of team games and also developing out dancve and gymnastics skills.
In Year 2, children will be encourtagd to change their own reading books when they need to and reading records will be checked once a week by the class teacher or teaching assistant.
