Online Safety & Digital Awareness in School

DRAFT ONLINE SAFETY POLICY

At Maundene, Online Safety is integral to our responsibility to ensure that children are kept safe in school. We are committed to the safe and responsible integration of technology throughout our school and recognise technology as a valuable tool for learners of all ages.

All pupils are given opportunities to creatively embrace technology as an essential part of our curriculum. This is achieved through the integration of classroom interactive displays, iPads, laptops, EdTech such as robotics, and of course, the internet.

The development of children’s digital awareness is woven throughout the Computing curriculum and also forms a part of our RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) provision.

There are well-publicised concerns regarding material on the internet, some of which is unsuitable for pupils. Whilst it is impossible to ensure that children will not access such material, our school, in liaison with London Grid for Learning, takes all necessary and reasonable measures to minimise the pupils’ access to such material. This includes:

  • Network filtering provided by LGfL to ensure that children cannot gain access to website that includes unsuitable material.
  • The requirement of both teaching and support staff to ensure that children are continually supervised whilst using a device connected to the internet.

The safe and responsible use of the internet is also an integral aspect of our partnership curriculum and woven throughout our computing curriculum provision.

 

What is e-safety?

E-safety is a term which means not only the internet but other ways in which young people communicate using electronic media, e.g. mobile phones.  It means ensuring that children and young people are protected from harm and supported to achieve the maximum benefit from new and developing technologies without risk to themselves or others.

 

Safer Internet Day

Our school takes part in Safer Internet Day which includes differentiated assemblies and activities across the school. This year, our Digital Leaders led the assembly as part of the Junior Leadership Team.

We have also held workshops across KS1 and KS2, specifically with year 6 children linked to the appropriate use of social networking. In KS1, children are draw into discussions through the use of texts and narrative such as ‘Digi-Duck’s Dilemma’.

Children in Year 6 explore social media and social networking through the discussion of privacy settings and appropriate online behaviours whilst interacting with social media platforms.

Digital Awareness within the Classroom

We employ a range of texts and narratives to engage the children in discussions about their learning. These carefully selected texts are applicable across key stages and each explore different aspects of our digital world.

Children in Year 5, for example, explored the text ‘When Charlie McButton Lost Power’ by Suzanne Collins.

The narrative engages children with the implications of our increasing use of technology for our personal relationships and questions whether the impact this has on us is always positive.

 

Digital Parenting

The role that we as parents play in supporting our children to develop the life skills and knowledge they need to use the online world safely and confidently, is crucial.

As our children grow and inhabit an online world that can sometimes be very different to the one we use, we may require support and advice in order to keep them safe.
